Glencairn is a small town in a valley between two mountains with a beautiful white sandy beach and turquoise blue and clear water. The “Jager Walk” beach, named after the first mayor of Glencairn, is an ideal and safe place (especially for children) for bathing and sunbathing. Changing rooms, showers, playgrounds, refreshment stands and restaurants – everything is there.

The safe and sheltered sandy beach in the warmer waters of False Bay is very popular with families and surfers, and in addition to the affordable accommodations that have made the last few years, there are some very beautiful and luxurious accommodations.

The appearance of the main traffic route through the place, which somehow reminds of an average American small town, is due to the fact that already since 1810 and into the 1990 years into Fish Hoek no alcohol was allowed to be served. The reason was a law by Lord Charles Somerset, who had had bad experiences with hauliers who did not ship their goods in time for Simon’s Town because of excessive alcohol consumption. Later, the community relied on this law to keep drunkards out of the Navy of Simon’s Town.

This stretch of coast south of Glencairn got its name from the large, rounded granite cliffs, which have withstood the weathering of the sea better than the former overlying sandstone formations of the Table Mountain.

Between the granite blocks invite two beautiful beaches for swimming, but in the summer quite overcrowded. Nearby (south) is also the popular golf course of Glencairn. The number of penguins on Boulders Beach is still rising …

However, this small natural area has a very different attraction today, with hundreds of thousands of visitors reaching the small beach each year, pushing their way along the wooden boardwalks: The Penguin Colony. In 1983, a lonely pair of penguins was found under the sheltered bushes above the beach.

Meanwhile, these two have multiplied and attracted other families, so that now more than 2,500 African penguins (also known as “Jackass penguins”) frolic on the small stretch of beach. The penguins love the place, as the limited fishing quotas in False Bay and the bushes provide them with a pleasant habitat.
